Farm and Ranch Water Infrastructure Program

The Farm and Ranch Water Infrastructure Program (FRWIP) supports the development of secure water supplies in Saskatchewan to expand irrigated acres, the livestock industry, encourage rural economic activity and mitigate the impacts of drought under four program categories:

  • On-Farm
  • Agricultural Business Development
  • Community Well
  • Irrigation District

Eligible Projects

Secure water supply projects that may be funded include:

On farm

Farmers, ranchers and First Nations bands, in the province of Saskatchewan, are eligible.

Purpose

  • To develop sustainable non-potable water supplies for agricultural use* to meet the needs of agricultural producers in Saskatchewan.* Agricultural use means water use for crop spraying, livestock watering or greenhouse production.  Water resources developed solely for household use or washing machinery DO NOT qualify for funding.

Projects

  • Small-diameter and large-diameter on-farm wells
    • Crop spraying projects will be evaluated on a case by case basis and must be for substantial agriculture use and have adequate water storage to be eligible.
  • Shallow buried pasture pipelines
  • Deep buried pipelines
  • Deep buried pipelines that connect to an established municipal water source
  • Dugouts and dugout expansions (minimum one-third size increase)
  • Relocation of existing livestock water systems for environmental purposes
  • Protecting existing wells
  • Decommissioning wells

Agri-Business Development

Agricultural producers, non-district irrigators, value-added agricultural businesses and First Nation bands, in the province of Saskatchewan, are eligible.

  • To develop irrigation infrastructure outside of irrigation districts to increase irrigation capacity and develop new irrigated acres in Saskatchewan.
  • * Agricultural use means water used for crop spraying, livestock watering, greenhouse, market garden or crop irrigation.  Water resources developed solely for household use, or washing machinery, DO NOT qualify for funding.

 Purpose

  • Dugout in conjunction with a tank loading facility
  • Increasing storage capacity at an existing tank loading facility to reduce tank loading times
  • Protecting existing wells
  • Decommissioning wells

Irrigation districts in Saskatchewan with an irrigation in-fill development plan and an irrigation replacement fund approved by the Ministry, are eligible.

Purpose

  • To expand irrigation infrastructure within existing irrigation districts to increase infill capacity and develop new irrigated acres in Saskatchewan.

Projects
